Twisted fate

“Put that down!” came a booming voice from behind Ava.

Her hairs stood on end as she nervously turned to face her husband.

“I said put it back,” he growled, taking long strides toward her.

Ava’s heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst out of her chest.

In seconds, Adrian was towering over her, boxing her in and pushing her against the wall.He snatched the book from her trembling hands and slammed it onto the table.

He gripped her face, holding her jaw as he stared at her with an intimidating intensity.

“Can you explain what you’re doing in my room?” he demanded, his voice shaking with anger.

“I…I’m sorry. I was…”Ava couldn’t even think of a lie. The way he was looking at her made her feel small and powerless, like he could crush her with a single word.

“I was curious,” she whispered, barely audible.

Adrian tilted her chin upward so he could hear her clearly. “You were what?”

Ava quaked under his gaze, hiccuping nervously like a disheveled puppy.

“I’m sorry… How can I make it up to you?” she managed to say.

Adrian’s expression shifted—surprised, almost amused.

“Hmm,” he murmured, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. “Make it up to me, huh?” His tone had a mischievous edge.

Confusion clouded Ava’s face. She didn’t understand why he was suddenly grinning, but she nodded anyway.

Adrian stepped closer, closing the space between them, and whispered something in her ear.

Ava’s cheeks flushed red as she glanced up at this man she still didn’t fully understand.

She had been forced into a marriage with Adrian two weeks ago, and he had made it very clear he wasn’t interested in her—not personally. She knew he needed her for something… she just didn’t know what.

Two hours later, Ava was dressed in an elegant black gown, her hair pulled into a sleek bun. She still had no idea what Adrian was planning, only that he’d told her to get ready because they were going out. That, apparently, was how she was meant to “make it up to him.”

She knocked on his door, feeling nervous. This was their first time going out together, though she doubted it was anything close to a date.

The door opened, revealing Adrian in a dark black suit that made his hazel eyes stand out and his brown hair appear almost copper. His gaze swept over her, unreadable, as though he was taking in every detail.

She waited for him to say something, but the silence stretched for a long, uncomfortable moment.

Finally, Adrian cleared his throat. “My friend invited us to a party. It’s mainly business-related, but it would look suspicious if I showed up alone—especially since I’m newly married.”

Ava nodded slowly as everything finally made sense.

“Of course. This was always about that. Our marriage is only for work,” she thought, a wave of disappointment washing through her as she followed Adrian to the car.

The hidden promise.

“What are you looking at?” said Ameera. Cardon, who hadn’t realized he was staring, cleared his throat. “Nothing,” he murmured. Although Cardon’s hand was on her waist and he was hovering over her, Ameera couldn’t bring herself to look up at him without blushing. Just standing that close to him made her light-headed; moreover, his scent was intoxicating. Cardon let out a deep sigh, which shifted Ameera’s attention to him. “Are you bored already?” she asked, although a part of her was scared he would say yes. “Just thinking about what I should do with you,” answered Cardon. “What do you mean?” said Ameera, seemingly alarmed. “Were you ever going to tell me that Xavier is your betrothed?” he blurted out. Although his voice sounded shaken, his face did not show any sign of emotion. Ameera swallowed. They had been on the dance floor for the last thirty minutes. Although it had felt magical before, now it became hard to breathe. Ameera could feel the blood draining from her e...

Unrequited love

Aaron's pov: She looked breathtaking in that white dress — all glittery and shimmering, shining brighter than the sun that was hovering above. The wind tugged at her hair, swaying her wavy brown locks toward her pretty face. Flowers everywhere — pink roses, her favorites. Although this was supposed to be a happy day, I could not suppress the feeling hidden beneath my smile. “I'm so pathetic.” A sense of defeat rose within me, mixed with flickers of anger and mortification. Reaching the altar, she took the hand that awaited her and stood beside her beloved. Jealousy thawed in me, making my heart race faster than before. I tore my gaze away, afraid of what my thoughts might make me do. Instead, I stared down at my only beam of light and hope — Ellie, my younger sister. Her eyes sparkled with awe as she stared at the bride. “Hannah looks so beautiful,” she bubbled excitedly. I couldn't disagree, for I thought the same. The priest held the microphone to his mouth, ready to offi...
